Who may benefit from MLD (Manual Lymphatic Drainage)?

Anyone can benefit from MLD as a healthy flow of lymph support the body immune system in fighting off toxins. The following indicates situations when lymphatic drainage may be useful/helpful:

  • primary lymphoedema

  • post-mastectomy

  • post-hysterectomy

  • oedema

  • varicose veins

  • post-surgical swelling

  • sinusitis

  • tinnitus

  • acne

  • eczema

  • cellulite

  • burns

  • Strains

  • Muscle/ligament tears

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Neck pain

  • Chronic pain

  • Migraines (can decrease fluid pressure that is causing irritation of the nerve fibres)

What is the lymphatic system?

The lymph system consists of lymph nodes, lymph vessels, and organs. The primary role of the lymphatic system is to isolate and fight infections, and to absorb excess fluid, fat and debris from our bodies. As these materials build up in the lymph system, it may become congested or blocked. Because the lymph system cleanses our entire body, symptoms of a sluggish or blocked system can manifest in many ways from frequent cold, excess weight, cellulite, acne, headaches, infections or joint pain.

What is Lympahtic Drainage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is gentle, rhythmic, non-invasive technique of specialised massage to encourage lymph flow in body. Most of the lymph vessels are located just under the skin therefore this massage is rather soft and delicate. Even though this massage is very light to the touch it is very powerful in its actions of moving lymph fluid. Sometimes the lymphatic system needs help to “unblock” and move the fluid thru to the circulatory system. The activated lymph system will indirectly affect organs such as the liver, kidneys and lungs, stimulating a detoxification process and boosting energy.

What slows down or stop the lymphatic system?

  • Stress

  • Chemical overload

  • (sport) injuries

  • Age

  • Lack of activity, sedentary jobs

  • Consumption of food additives

Is there any time I shouldn't have Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

People who suffer these indications should not have MLD done as an increase of lymph flow could be detrimental:

  • Acute inflammation-caused by bacteria, viruses, poisons. Tissues would be red, hot and painful with congestion accompanied by fewer. It is the best to wait a few days until the condition is not acute and the body has had a chance to clean up the area.

  • Malignant tumors

  • Thrombosis

  • Major heat problems

  • Pregnancy – first three months

  • Chemotherapy
